Legs are shaking. Heart is pounding. Head is spinning. Palms getting sweaty. Breathe! You know you will survive.
You might not believe me when I say that I’m a travelblogger and I have a fear of flying. I really do. I’m a tourism professional and I do know that the chance of dying in your own bed is more likely than in a plane crash. But I still can’t help myself from grabbing those armrests and taking deep breaths.
Everytime the plane stands in the beginning of the runway I start to think: “The most dangerous parts of the flight are take-off and landing.” Then I start freaking out. In Finnish we say that the knowledge makes the pain worse, so the less you know the better.
I know I should rather think that it is one of the most safest places on Earth.
But I cannot.
For me flying is a necessity to get quickly enough from place A to place B. What makes this sound even weirder is that I really like planes! I have worked two years at the airport and I find it intruiging to see all the planes come and go. I’m also interested in the plane types and I even held visitor tours around the airport. Planes and flying are some of my favourite topics even though I always start to get nervous when buckling my seatbelt.
The worst thing that can happen during the flight are the air bumps. I hate them, I really do. I know air bumps are not dangerous – pilots say that they are like a bumpy road. But still my stomach turns in every bump.
But seriously people, keep the seatbelts fastened even if the light is off! Air bumps, or turbulence, can also be sudden and dangerous. (Maybe more on this topic later.)
I’ve done those crazy trips with 23h travel time from Helsinki to Phuket via Milan and Hong Kong and I must admit that then the last flight has already been bearable.
If teleporting was invented already I’d use that but as long as the planes remain the fastest option to travel I have to bare with it.
I’m glad I haven’t got stuck with my fear and that my love for travel will keep me going. I also want to encourage you all to overcome your fears and at least don’t let your fear control you.
The fear is only inside your head.

This is so relatable! I love planes and I hate flying and yes, air bumps are horrible. I had a head injury which caused an inner ear problem. I thought I would never be able to fly again but I did it – over 8 hours on a plane for the first time again. 7 hours of turbulence and it didn’t stop (I wanted to open a door and jump 😂). I wish there was another way to get to our destination but it’s all worth it once you actually get there.
It’s great to hear that I’m not the only one here! 😀 I’m really glad you recovered from your head injury! I can totally feel you with that bumpy flight -that’s my nightmare! If there was easier way to travel – I’d choose that 😂
Oh god, I’m the EXACT same. I have to constantly think about the destination and remind myself that it’ll be worth it ;-; xx
Awesome that I have some soul sisters in this! I also always think about the prize that is waiting me after the flight 😀
Great post. Congratulations!
Than you Laura! 🙂
I guess this moment comes in everyone’s life some or the other time… I can feel it…
